Calapooia Food Alliance Minutes July17, 2017

Present: Board members: Don Lyon, Steve Brenner, Gini Bramlett, Kathleen Swayze Sally Lockhart, and guest Jerry Papineau who was present to observe and possibly get involved with the CFA in some capacity.

Minutes: Kathleen made a motion to approve minutes. Minutes were seconded by Steve. All approved.

Treasurers Report: Kathleen reported nothing significant in the financials. We had some honey sales, and will most likely need to purchase more honey. There were a few expenses for the garden.

Community Garden: Don said that he and Steve need to redo the specifications for the garden platform before they are able to continue with the construction Plots are looking good. Garlic needs harvesting and braiding for the Aug. 5 nonprofit day. Braiding is Tuesday July 25 at Don’s house at 9 am. Don bought hose hangers for the garden.

Taking Root: Pickling and Salsa Workshops, Mother Earth News Fair and the Aug 5 event at the park. Also, time to promote the market again and the “I Love Farmer’s Markets” stickers and tats.

Thursday Market: Let vendors know they can use the carts to move their wares. Michelle Harper would like to use our market equipment for the August First Friday event. The board Ok’d the request.

Community Workshops: Don reported taking the hot water bath classes at the school and that it had good attendance. The new direction of education the CFA is taking was discussed. There was also a short discussion about the community bldg. kitchen becoming certified. New tamale workshops will be Aug. 2 and 30th and Sept 20 at 7pm.

Munch Night-next one is Sept 15. Discussed inviting a friend of the owner of Early Dawn who is becoming an herbalist.

CFA Annual Potluck- at Kathleen’s Friday at 7pm. She asked we let her know about attendance. Menu was planned.

New Horizon’s Film Gathering: The gathering will begin again in September. Steve suggested “The Cove” a film about dolphins. Some objected because of the graphic violence contained in the film.

Food Preservation Workshops: Workshops by OSU Extension and the CFA will be held at Brownsville Elementary One is July 13 on Tomatoes and Salsas and the other is July 27 on Pickles and fermenting. Classes are $15. Gini will have application available at the market.

Cider Pressing: First pressing will be early September. Details to come later.

New Business: The citywide event ‘s focus on Aug. 5 focus is preparing for an emergency as well as community non-profits. We will have our tri-fold board, a clipboard for volunteer sign ups, Munch Night, Seed to Supper, cider pressing and Thursday Marketplace info. Don will bring free seeds to hand out, Kathleen will bring honey to sell and Gini will update the tri-fold boards for display.

Also discussed was partnering with the Garden Club to co-host a speaker from the Thyme Garden in the fall.

Don sent a thank you along with honey to the Watershed for their presentation at our last Munch Night.

Steve got the new banners: one large to replace the one at the Community Garden and a small one for the Aug 5 event.

Elections: Steve sent out emails to members to vote for officers. It was unanimous to keep present officers. He said it was the smallest participation to date.

Next CFA Meeting: Monday, July 17, 2017 at Community Room.
